ABOUT COLLEGE
The Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology(IIEST), Shibpur is a public engineering and research institution located in Kolkata, West Bengal. It was Founded on 24th November 1856 with the name of Civil Engineering College. On 12 February 1920, the name was changed to Bengal Engineering College, Shibpur. The word Shibpur was deleted on 24 March 1921 and it became Bengal Engineering College. In 2010 Department of Aerospace Engineering and Department of Applied Mechanics started. In March 2014, it was upgraded to the status of Institutes of National Importance under the banner of Indian Institutes of Engineering Science and Technology, thus renaming it IIEST Shibpur. In June 2014, Govt. of West Bengal appointed IIEST Shibpur as the Mentor Institute for Indian Institute of Information Technology, Kolkata, the eleventh addition to the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) family of engineering institutes. It was inaugurated by the President of India on 24 August 2014. It is THE SECOND OLDEST ENGINEERING COLLEGE IN INDIA WITH A VERY INTERESTING STORY The Roorkee Engineering College established in the year 1847 AD and recognized as the first Engineering College in India. The Government Engineering College, Pune established in the year 1854. The Bengal Engineering College established in the year 1856. The first batch of a degree course in Civil Engineering turned out in 1912 from Pune Engineering College whereas the first batch in Civil Engineering passed out from B.E.College, in the year 1864. Therefore, if we consider the year of establishment the B.E.College will be the third engineering college in India. However, considering the year of graduation our B.E.College stands as the 2nd oldest Engineering College in India. IIEST Shibpur was ranked 17 among engineering colleges in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2017. and 73 overall. It was ranked 19th among engineering colleges in India in 2017 by The Week. This college is affiliated to the University Grants Commission and is approved by AICTE and also offered courses like B. Tech, B.Tech+ M.Tech, B.Arch, MBA, M.Tech, M.Sc and Ph.D. in different streams. The area of the library is 3,000 square meters. The collection of books is about 158,000 and 41,000 bound volumes of journals, and a collection of documents, such as patents, standards, technical reports, and pamphlets. The library has old and rare books and journals of the nineteenth century.
